LADIES AND GERMS

I was into acting as a kid—remember, I played the lead role of Oliver Twist in a community stage production—so whenever my grandparents and relatives came over, I cajoled and whee dled them into watching a “performance.”

Grandma Rose was my most enthusiastic fan, and her face always lit up when I earnestly pleaded with her to watch me act and sing on my “stage”—the living room.

“Ladies and Germs,” she would announce to my parents and other relatives in the house. “Now performing, Jordan Rubin!”

My parents and relatives would quietly chuckle at Grandma Rose’s humorous introduction—and in my mind, I can still hear her saying “Ladies and Germs” almost four decades later. Thanks to Google, I know where she got the catchphrase. After Grandma Rose married in the late 1940s, an invention called television invaded homes. An acerbic, cigar-smoking vaudevillian who eagerly embraced the new medium was none other than comedian Milton Berle, who staged a live variety show on Tuesday nights. In the days when you could count the number of channels on two hands, “Uncle Miltie” ruled the roost.

“Good evening, ladies and germs,” he would announce at the start of every show. “I mean ladies and gentlemen. I call you ladies and gentlemen, but you know who you really are.”1

Cue the laugh track.

When it comes to probiotic health, “ladies and germs” is no laughing matter. If you’re a guy reading this chapter, then count your blessings because the only terrain you must worry about is between the mouth and the bowels. Women, on the other hand, have two major areas of the body to be concerned about: their digestive tracts and their reproductive areas.

The reason why women are more vulnerable to having an unbalanced terrain in their nether regions is because of the physiological fact that their vaginal orifices are (1) exposed to the outside world and (2) are warm incubators of good and bad bacteria. These days, bad bacteria inside their vaginas seem to be gaining the upper hand, causing urinary tract infections (UTIs), overgrowth of a yeast called Candida albicans, and smelly, itchy conditions such as bacterial vaginosis. Add to that the fact that women experience constipation and irritable bowel syndrome in greater numbers than men, and I’m confident that I can make the case that women need the Probiotic Diet more than men.

There’s no doubt that the female reproductive anatomy is one of God’s most awesome creations. I have no idea why some women grow up hearing that their vaginas are dirty or full of germs. From everything I’ve read, vaginas should be full of good germs that keep the bad bacteria at bay inside their reproductive systems.

The bacteria charged with protecting the vagina are Lactobacilli, and if you’re doing a double take, it’s because you’ve remembered that Lactobacilli are the same bacteria found in cultured dairy products like yogurt. Lactobacilli provide a natural disinfectant while helping women maintain a healthy balance of microorganisms that prevent the overgrowth of yeast. The main competition inside
